The State of Maryland has a motto of “Strong deeds, Gentle Words” but perhaps it should just be “We Don’t Have Nurses.” From CBSNews:

University of Maryland Medical System, at its peak in June 2022, saw as many as 27% of its bedside nursing staff leave their jobs, on par with the national average, Rowen said. Many of those who left the system cited feeling burned out from the demands of the public health crisis or fears of bringing the deadly virus home to their loved ones. Others left the hospital network for travel nursing jobs with much higher pay. “As nurses left, the burden became more extreme,” Rowen recalled. “And it created a cycle of people leaving.”

The proposed solutions in Maryland and many other states always seem to center on “training more people” which would not be a bad approach but unfortunately, there just aren’t enough “people” to train into the role. Nursing take a great deal of education and it has a high level of standard to become a fully fledged nurse in most states so we don’t think the state’s strategy to add more enrollments will ultimately work.
