With summer just around the corner, it’s almost time for most kids to enjoy the traditional summer camp but in Maine that may not be happening in some areas. From Fox23:

But even with perks like housing, which Camp Beech Cliff also offers counselors, the pay to work at summer camps can’t compete with other seasonal jobs.

Deal said that because of the local summertime labor shortage, older teenagers and college students can get other local jobs that pay $20 per hour or higher — better than working at a day camp. In addition to providing housing, Camp Beech Cliff is located in a bucolic setting, on Echo Lake and directly abutting Acadia National Park.

“We can’t compete with well-paying jobs,” Deal said. “It’s very hard to keep up with the local economy and the pay scale they offer.”

Back in December of 2021, we wrote, “What’s Happening With Hourly Wage? T-Rex Will Eat First” where we outlined how what is happening across the United States with regard to labor shortages is now coming to fruition. Large deep pocket corporations will snap up the best labor by offering premium wages and the next set will be handed down to the next largest predator until we get to the small scavengers who are left to pick clean what is left.

Society will undergo a transformation over the next decade and no one can really be sure about the impact but one thing is certain labor heavy services will be more expensive and harder to come by unless some solution is found.

And while many companies are embracing artificial intelligence as an end all solution we are highly skeptical. Artificial intelligence can’t fix a roof, install plumbing, help an elderly person feed themselves or put out fires.

We do expect AI to be used as a mechanism to squeeze more fees and revenue from firm’s existing customer base and not much more.

To find out what happens, stay tuned, stay profitable and stay solvent…
