The Missouri Independent has an excellent article on the demographic crisis in the United States and asks a very important question, “Who’s going to work there?” We encourage you to read the whole article because it contains many bits of information, many of which, we’ve written about here since the inception of this blog.

From the Independent:

“If we can’t fill the jobs we’ve got now and we start building more manufacturing plants and that sort of thing, who’s going to work there?” he said.

In the article there are various opinions about the current cause of labor shortages and here’s a summary of some:

  1. People want to work remotely
  2. People are lazy
  3. We aren’t having enough kids
  4. There is a shortage of housing
  5. There is a shortage of young people
  6. Too many older people working
  7. Not enough day care for parents

All of the issues in the article can be reduced to two words: demographics doomsday. The article skips over the largest problem though, boomers retiring, because that alone will deplete the labor force by at least 40 million by 2030 if not more.

And of course, politicians are incapable of acting to fix or solve anything so the problem will only get worse with some states ending up big winners and other states ending up big losers. There is a divided between wealthy and poor and that situation will be exacerbated at the state level over the next decade. Poor states will become poorer and more isolated and rich states will become richer and attract more talent.

There are profits to be made in all this transition so stay tuned, stay profitable and stay solvent…
