About the Econonaut

Welcome to Econonaut!

“Econo” is short for ‘economics’ which is Latin for “household management” and ‘naut’ is Greek for “sailor” so together we start on a journey of navigating through the economic landscape on a journey to financial success.

We started this blog because we love economics and we spend most of our free time reading up on the latest economic data, company earnings, and public policy. We also spend a great deal of time reading economic blogs and we were concerned about the lack of any investment advice on many of these sites.

Seriously, what’s the point of telling us there is a recession coming and not advising us on how to protect our investment portfolios? Why do economic bloggers rarely offer any advice beyond “recession coming” or “booming economy?”

Lastly, we will be focusing about one key concept that we rarely see economic bloggers talk about: demographics. In the United States, we have a serious crisis heading our way in 2030. This is the year that all “boomers” will hit retirement age of 65 or older. What that means is the United States will have 70 million or more people added to the social security and medicare system. It is yet to be determined how that tsunami will impact the economic coastline of the United States.

The ramifications of boomers hitting retiring age will also have a huge impact on the labor force. Don’t forget that Generation “Xers” will be right behind and that’s another cohort of 65 million people or a second tsunami wave.

I hope you enjoy the journey to 2030!
