A while ago, we wrote about the tough choices ahead with regards to labor. In Tough Choices: Prison Guards or 911 Operators we wrote about how cities are struggling to fill city jobs and it often boils down to pay and job satisfaction.
Michigan Radio and NPR recently had an excellent article discussing the challenges of Michigan hospitals. In essence, Michigan hospitals can’t compete with McDonalds pay.
“We are losing employees to McDonald’s for a job that pays better and is less stressful,” Peters said. “And we are incredibly limited in our ability to compete with rising wages in other industries.”

If the labor shortage trend continues, it’s likely hospitals will close down and tragically, they will close down at a time when 60 million boomers will be relying on healthcare in greater amounts. A prudent boomer that has a history of medical problems may want to carefully research areas where there isn’t severe labor shortages in choosing where to retire.
